Is CBD oil effective against Covid-19?
Coronavirus is a very hot topic. We can no longer count the number of substances that are supposed to help treat Covid-19 disease, only to find out later that they do the opposite. CBD oils and other products containing this precious cannabidiol are also included in this list. How much truth is there in this? So honestly, without advertising or undue praise?
Canadian scientists and CBD - it started with them
One of the first centres to take an interest in using CBD oils to fight Covid-19 was the University of Lethbridge in Calgary, and the research was inspired by their good research on CBD during the SARS outbreak in 2002. A team led by Dr Igor Kovalchuk tried to prove that the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD oils could alleviate the symptoms of the disease. Did they succeed? The researchers claim that they did.
However, this is only a half-success, as it is only a preliminary study and - importantly - has not yet been conducted on actual Covid-19 patients. Although the study was only conducted in vitro, the results may nevertheless be the reason why CBD will start to be used in treatment. In fact, it has been proven that the substances contained in cannabis reduce by as much as 73% the number of ACE2 receptors, with which coronavirus binds to body cells. In practice, this can be translated into almost ¾ less likelihood that contact with the virus will result in infection.

CBD oils and viral infections
Cannabinoids are also known for their antimicrobial properties - They combine both antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral effects. However, we should not expect them to magically protect us from SARS-Cov-2 infection. Firstly, because we do not yet have full data on this. Secondly, the scientific evidence, which has already proven the very beneficial effects of CBD oils on health, may lead to the misconception that it is a remedy for everything. Because of this, some people may lose caution and give up on taking care of themselves in other ways.
It should therefore be stated unequivocally:
Yes, CBD oils have miraculous properties and have an extremely positive effect on health.
Yes, CBD oils are an excellent complementary therapy, an extremely effective dietary supplement that works holistically and strengthens the body.
Yes, CBD oils have antiviral effects for viruses that are already well understood.
But let us also remember that:
CBD oils cannot be used unwisely under the idea that they will deal with Covid-19 on their own.
Is it worth using CBD oils?
Although it cannot be said that CBD oils will give us 100% protection from Covid-19, it is worth remembering how Cannabidiol helps us to maintain the body's biological balance. Social distance, covering the nose and mouth and taking care of oneself are among the basic rules of hygiene and common sense. So it is important to remember that, although the direct effect of CBD on coronavirus has not yet been proven, other properties are known that can be helpful in the prevention of infections:
- strong anti-inflammatory properties - The body, which does not have to constantly fight inflammation, will have more strength to cope with a possible infection;
- stimulation of the immune system - It is probably no longer necessary to convince anyone of the importance of a well-functioning system in order to produce antibodies;
- calming effect, reducing stress levels - It is well known that stress is one of the most important factors leading to reduced immunity.
For the above reasons alone, the use of CBD oils can be recommended during the Covid-19 outbreak. However, no hasty conclusions should be drawn. This is not because the effect of CBD oils on the coronavirus has not been fully confirmed (although research is promising), but because we have yet to understand the virus itself. Despite months of research, we still don't know how it works, how it gets infected and what traces it leaves in the body. It seems that we simply have to let the scientists work.
