Does CBD oil cause heart palpitations?

Heart palpitations are quite a nuisancewhich may be a symptom of a cardiovascular disorder or simply a subjective feeling. It can also accompany neurosis - patients often complain of palpitations despite exemplary test results. Palpitations often increase after drinking too much coffee, drinking alcohol or other stimulants, or during severe stress, and also at night - especially during panic attacks or anxiety attacks. Frequent palpitations are experienced by people suffering from hyperthyroidism or taking medication for chronic diseases. Can CBD bring relief in this case too? Does CBD oil cause palpitations? Does CBD oil help with heart palpitations? Or does it increase them?

Does CBD oil cause heart palpitations?

CBD is an all-natural and legal phytocannabinoid derived from the Cannabis Sativa plant, with completely non-psychoactive effects, unlike THC. THC can cause anxiety, induce euphoric moods or cause tachycardia - accelerated heart muscle activity, often described as palpitations, which was confirmed in a 2011 study and published in the professional journal Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. It is THC that causes the blood vessels to rapidly relax and open, which can result in a rapid drop in blood pressure. This, in turn, forces the heart to beat faster to maintain a normal blood volume-an increase of up to 50 beats per minute over a normal heartbeat, which is already definitely noticeable and can cause anxiety. CBD, on the other hand, can also mitigate the effects of THC by blocking its action on the CB1 receptor.

However, it is important to note that CBD does not affect the heart and cardiovascular system in the same way as THC. It is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that works not only with the receptors of the endocannabinoid system, but also with other processes to promote healing and relieve pain.

CBD, on the other hand, has many health-promoting properties, including anti-anxiety, sedative or analgesic properties. It helps with psychotic disorders such as bipolar disorder or depression or anxiety, has antioxidant properties proven by many studies, and is also used in the prevention of insomnia and many other conditions. Its cardioprotective effect has been confirmed in many research centres.

CBD oil and heart palpitations

One of the most recent studies conducted and published in 2021 shows the effect of CBD supplementation on the heart rate of horses in stressful situations. A control group containing nine horses, received 100mg of CBD daily. They noticed a marked improvement in heart rate, comparing the situation before and after the introduction of the CBD supply.

The next promising report is the conclusion of a small study conducted in 2017 on a group of nine men who were given a 600mg dose of CBD along with a placebo control group. The men who received the above dose of the cannabinoid saw their systolic blood pressure fall steadily and by an average of about 6 points. And this is how CBD differs from THC. The optimum pressure value has an important impact on heart function, as abnormal heart function can precisely result in palpitation.

It is also worth remembering that high levels of the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol, among others, are also not without echoes for the cardiovascular system. The use of CBD oils calms, soothes and protects against excessive stress, which certainly has tangible benefits for the heart.

CBD oil and palpitations

The effects of CBD on the heart were examined in a recently published study on coronary artery obstruction in mice. Mice given CBD 10 minutes beforehand showed a reduced risk of heart attack and, depending on the dose, also a lower level of severity of the heart attack that occurred.

Scientists have even concluded that CBD may have a protective effect on the heart during an actual heart attack and reduce its severity. They believe the substance may have an anti-arrhythmic effect.

The relationship between CBD and the cardiovascular system is quite complex, and scientists are still working to understand it. Nevertheless, the ever-expanding body of research,,, only reinforces the belief that CBD products definitely still have a large and not entirely undiscovered potential. Significantly, research has proven that it is not CBD that causes heart palpitations, but THC. CBD definitely has health-promoting potential.
