CBD oil for Lyme disease

CBD oil for AD

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of more than a hundred cannabinoids discovered so far in cannabis seeds (cannabis sativa). Of these, the best known cannabinoid is THC, which is the predominant substance in cannabis and which exhibits psychoactive effects. CBD, on the other hand, has no psychoactive properties and no significant side effects, which is why it is a legal substance in Poland and widely available without a prescription. The popularity of cannabidiol is very high and continues to grow, as it exhibits many health-promoting as well as therapeutic and even curative properties. And whether CBD oil, i.e. cannabidiol dissolved in, for example, hemp seed oil or olive oil, can help to treat Lyme disease and its symptoms?

Lyme disease - causes of the disease and its symptoms

Lyme disease is an infectious disease transmitted by ticks. It is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi. Infection with the disease occurs after a bite from an infected tick. Although recent reports state that spiders and flies can also infect.

It takes a week to 10 days after the bite and usually a so-called erythema migrans, which is a red or bluish red patch, appears in this area. In addition to the lesions on the skin, various complaints may also appear. These can include headaches and muscle aches, fatigue, fever and neck stiffness.

Untreated Lyme disease can lead to very serious consequences - from meningitis or encephalitis to inflammation of the joints, nerves or heart rhythm disturbances. And this is only the beginning, as the borrelia spirochetes can nest anywhere in the body. One of the symptoms is also the so-called migratory pain, which is extremely troublesome. And unfortunately, no vaccine against Lyme disease has been invented to date. And since the erythema is quite often simply absent, by the time Lyme disease is correctly diagnosed, the consequences can already be very serious indeed.

So why use CBD oils during treatment? If only because their anti-inflammatory effect is already quite well researched by scientists and there is a wealth of scientific publications available on the subject. But it is not only this property of cannabidiol that can be helpful when treating Lyme disease and its consequences.

What properties cannabidiol (CBD) has

CBD oils may contain either part or the full spectrum of cannabinoids found in cannabis seeds. It is also rich in unsaturated fatty acids, including linoleic (LA) and alpha-linolenic (ALA) acids and amino acids. These oils also contain THC, the psychoactive substance for which cannabis is famous. However, the concentration of this cannabinoid cannot, by law, exceed 0.2%. This is not an amount that would have any psychoactive effect, but with this insignificant dose of THC, the effects of CBD become stronger.

Research to date on cannabidiol, and there is a plethora of it, confirms its comprehensive health-promoting but also medicinal properties among which are these:
  • - analgesic
  • - anti-inflammatory
  • - antioxidant
  • - anxiety-relieving and anti-anxiety,
  • - protecting the cells of the nervous system
  • - antiepileptic
  • - promoting sleep and improving the quality of sleep
  • - antipsychotics

Fight Lyme disease naturally

The standard in Poland is to treat Lyme disease with an antibiotic, which is given in large doses over several weeks. But not everyone ends up with a cure for Lyme disease. Many people suffer from what is known as Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS), which manifests itself, among other things, as constant fatigue, headaches, migratory pain that appears in a different place from time to time or joint pains. These complaints accompany patients even for years, often incorrectly diagnosed and treated.

This is because borrelia has the ability to enter a dormant state. It forms cysts in the body, in which it remains asymptomatic for years, and when, for example, the body weakens, it attacks, causing many serious ailments. It therefore happens that the patient again and again takes a large dose of antibiotic, which of course is not without negative effects on the body.

This is why patients often seek alternative, natural treatments for Lyme disease and its symptoms. These include bioresonance, kits of specially selected herbs or, according to the results of a 2017 study conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, it is possible to eliminate Lyme disease by taking essential oils of oregano, clove buds and cinnamon bark. CBD oil is also increasingly mentioned among the natural ways to help treat Lyme disease.

How CBD oil works for Lyme disease

There are not many studies on the effect of cannabidiol on Lyme disease itself, but it is worth citing here the results of one conducted by London Metropolitan University. Such as: "CBD used in combination with other antibiotics enhanced the effect of some of them, depending on the type of bacteria". But it is important to know that CBD has a different effect on different medications taken, sometimes enhancing their effects, sometimes speeding them up and sometimes slowing them down. Therefore, when taking medication, it is a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider if you wish to take CBD oils.

There are also theories that taking high enough doses of CBD oils can effectively eradicate the borrelia bacteria, and that cannabidiol itself has a stronger effect on this particular bacterium than some antibiotics.

CBD oil for Lyme disease symptoms

Thanks to its extremely broad properties, CBD oil (especially full spectrum) can effectively help alleviate many of the discomforts that accompany Lyme disease, especially when antibiotics have failed to deal with the bacteria and it has taken up residence in the body. Symptoms that CBD oils can alleviate include:

  • inflammation caused by bacteria - The anti-inflammatory properties of cannabidiol have been known and appreciated for a long time. They are confirmed by numerous scientific studies. And Lyme disease can result in extensive inflammation of both muscles and joints, but also of the meninges or brain. When dealing with inflammation, it is worth using full spectrum CBD oils, as these are the ones that show the greatest anti-inflammatory properties;
  • pain - also the pain-relieving properties of CBD have been supported by a great deal of research. And pain unfortunately often accompanies people with Lyme disease. This is most often headache, joint pain, but also the extremely annoying and poignant so-called migratory pain. It is located in different parts of the body, e.g. in the shoulder, foot or under the shoulder blade and can last for hours without even responding to strong painkillers;
  • permanent fatigue - Lyme disease patients very often feel exhausted rather than tired. Even though they lack the strength to perform the simplest of tasks, they are unable to sleep. This is where CBD oil, the ideal antidote to insomnia, can help. It will not only help you fall asleep, but will also make your sleep deep and peaceful;
  • depressive states - CBD oils have a relaxing effect without being psychoactive. They are also not addictive and their side effects are basically minor.

As you can see from the above, it really is worth including CBD oils, especially full-spectrum ones, in the treatment of Lyme disease. Not only will they assist the body in fighting the bacteria itself, but they can also have a significant impact on alleviating the symptoms that accompany the disease.
